The Last Days of Disco was in many ways a simple experiment. I began using permanent markers in 2008 in a much looser, abstract way. Gradually, I started working more representationally, typically from old photos. This drawing was my first time using metallic Sharpie, so I really didn’t know what would happen. This coupled with the complexity of colors on the disco ball, it was a chance I took, and it turned out nicely. The title The Last Days of Disco just represents what I try to accomplish with the marker drawings—a sense of youth and the passage of time.
