Opened in the spring of 1903, Luna Park was the fantastical brainchild of architect Frederic Thompson and businessman Elmer Dundy. With 22 acres of land on Coney Island, the park was a sprawling microcosm complete with amusement park rides, shopping areas, circus animals, restaurants, live entertainment, and more, all nestled into an architectural dreamland of towers, lakes, and winding promenades. Luna Park at Night was shot in 1905 after sunset when all 250,000 lights would illuminate over 1,000 red and white spires, domes, and minarets. At the center of it all stood the 200-foot-tall Electric Tower, lit by 20,000 incandescent lamps. During a time when electricity was still used quite sparingly, Luna Park would transform into a true celestial sensation after dark.
