Arrangement of Jugs is a gorgeous example of how Hodgkins could turn a modest subject into a complex topical statement by subverting traditional approaches to genre-specific work at a pivotal historical moment. Speaking of subversion, Hodgkins painted until her death, mostly worked with women, and escaped marriage to instead build a life of travel, painting, and education with her longtime partner and fellow New Zealand-born artist Della Richmond.
